You can buy this handmade carpet before it arrives in our Tewkesbury showroom. The rug has not yet been received into our stock at Tewkesbury and has yet to be photographed at the showroom. Although the images may not be as good as our normal images, they are photographs of the finished rug. Once the carpet has been transferred from our warehouse, we will rephotograph it.

This handmade Afghan Kharjeen rug is crafted in northwest Afghanistan by skilled artisan weavers who preserve traditional techniques passed down through generations. Using vegetable-dyed, handspun wool, the rug features a warm terracotta background, with a contemporary design that blends with traditional motifs. Its durable, hardwearing construction ensures practicality while adding a distinctive, artistic touch to any space.

Afghan handmade carpets are becoming very well-regarded. This market has been growing quite fast in recent years, with a greater emphasis on higher-quality knotting and the influence of Pakistan in many finishing processes, such as initial tensioning to correct alignment issues where the weaver has drifted the wefts, causing the pattern to run out. Next, adjustments may be undertaken, followed by surface clipping, herbal washing and tumbling. This combination of Afghan weaving and finishing in Pakistan has been a great success. These carpets are closely knotted and usually finished with an interesting and unusual bound multicoloured fringe.

Kharjeen (Khorjin) rugs, runners and carpets are still hand-knotted, and the wool is coloured with vegetable dye. The Kharjeen (also known as Khurjeen) rug designs can be reminiscent of Gabbeh designs. The colours of the Kharjeen rugs and carpets are similar in many ways to those used in our Samarkand and Loribaft collections. Some Kharjeen pieces do not have fringes and are finished with a plain kilim end or binding secured to prevent fraying. The other rugs are generally produced like the Samarkand carpets with an unusual bobbin wind on the warps.

It is worth remembering that these handmade rugs are unique and special. Owning one is something you can enjoy for many years. I recommend buying a handmade rug with the best natural fibre: wool.
