Kilim rugs are serviceable and practical, giving the owner the advantage of being made from one of the most beautiful natural yarns, "wool", and are often completely reversible. Vegetable-dyed wool is a beautiful natural fibre that usually contains high levels of lanolin, making it very practical. Kelim is woven using hand-dyed yarn in both the warp and the weft. The patterns produced are often identified by the region in which they are made, and the designs are passed down through generations from mother to daughter.

The term we use to describe a flat-woven rug instead of a hand-knotted rug (pile) appears in two forms (to assist your search term). Flat-woven rugs, handmade in Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, and Turkey, are known as Kilim, whereas those made in other Oriental areas are known as Kelim.
